At h State University of Alexandria (LSUA), the future of the workforce isn’t something to anticipate—it’s something to actively build. As industries continue to shift and workforce needs grow more specialized, LSUA is leaning into its role as a responsive, ever-evolving institution, positioned to support the state with programs that are both timely and well-designed.
Ideally, new programs don’t start in the classroom—they start with paying attention to the needs of the community. In Central h, hospitals are searching for nurses. Employers are seeking cybersecurity specialists. Communities across the state are looking for professionals trained to respond to natural disasters.
“These gaps signaled a need for expanded capacity and new pathways into the profession,” said Adam Lord, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications. “Workforce trends across h made it clear that expanding into high-demand degree programs was both necessary and mission-aligned for LSUA.”
Several of the latest additions to the LSUA degree program portfolio include:
- Cybersecurity
- Aviation
- Disaster Preparedness
- Zoo Sciences
- Digital Storytelling
- Artificial Intelligence
- Bioinformatics
Step into the shoes of an LSUA student for a day, and you’ll quickly notice that learning isn’t limited to the classroom. Students in healthcare programs work directly with patients during clinical rotations. Aviation students train at Alexandria International Airport. Zoo Sciences students gain hands-on experience through local partnerships, including the Alexandria Zoo.
Students are stepping into programs designed with up-to-date tools and technology and are being trained with current industry standards in mind. LSUA is home to a unique lab environment known as the Cyberrange, where cybersecurity students are trained to combat simulated cyberattack scenarios. Even creative fields like Digital Storytelling are grounded in real-world practice, with students producing content in studio spaces and collaborating with local professionals.
“LSUA places a strong emphasis on hands-on experience, ensuring students engage directly with the environments and challenges they will encounter in their careers,” said Lord.
In addition to promoting real-world learning experiences, some of LSUA’s distinctive new programs reflect the realities of life in h. Programs like the Disaster Preparedness and Response degree and the Zoo Sciences pathway inform and train future leaders of the region’s unique risks and ecological challenges.
“In a state regularly impacted by hurricanes, flooding, and other natural disasters, there is a clear need for professionals trained in emergency response,” Lord said. “However, the skills students develop here at LSUA are transferable well beyond the region.”
Just as important as developing programs that offer students relevant, real-world experience is ensuring these opportunities remain within reach through flexible learning formats and affordable tuition. Programs like Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, and Digital Storytelling might sound cutting-edge—and they are—but LSUA is equally focused on making them accessible. With online programs reaching students across all 50 states, LSUA is continuously evaluating and widening access to higher learning opportunities.
For students with their sights set on post-undergraduate education, LSUA’s programs offer clarity and direction. Through partnerships with institutions like LSU Health New Orleans and LSU Health Shreveport, students have access to structured pathways that lead into professional programs.
“Many of today’s emerging programs exist because employers are actively seeking talent in areas where demand is outpacing supply,” Lord said. “Choosing one of these pathways often means positioning yourself at the front edge of opportunity.”
