As we approach the Fourth of July, many people are planning to celebrate with the customary display of fireworks. While the colorful lights in the sky are a lovely way to celebrate our independence, keep in mind that the loud bangs and booms, screeching sounds and bright flashes can be terrifying for pets. Even those that are normally not bothered by loud sounds or lightning and thunder can become distressed by fireworks.

As some cooler weather starts to set in, people will begin to spend more time outdoors, and this includes  outings with the pets. The New Orleans metro area has become a dog park community, with so many outdoor spaces to take the pets -- several designed specifically for off-leash fun.

As pets age, their health care needs change. As the mom to two senior dogs, I am very aware of any changes in behavior, eating habits and activity levels. Both of my dogs are short on hearing and one is starting to have some vision impairment, but otherwise, both are handling their golden years like champs.

We all know that cats are peculiar beings, and their happiness can set the tone for the entire household. To shine a light on the importance of feline happiness, September is recognized as National Happy Cat Month. The CATalyst Council, a nonprofit dedicated to feline health care and welfare, started this annual awareness campaign to educate and inform cat owners on what they can do to ensure their feline is happy and healthy.
