A man found shot to death inside a car in Covington early Wednesday has been identified as 26-year-old Antoine Collar of Denham Springs, according to police.

Covington police said they received a 911 call about 1:50 a.m. reporting the sound of gunshots at 1045 N. Florida St.

There they found Collar shot multiple times in the front seat of a rental car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said it appears Collar was visiting someone and was killed as he prepared to leave.

They said no drugs were found at the scene and the motive for the killing was unknown.

Covington Police Chief Tim Lentz said Collar had a long criminal history.

Records show Collar was arrested and charged in 2009 for armed robbery and attempted second-degree kidnapping in Baton Rouge, though the kidnapping charge was later dropped. He also has previously been charged with second-degree battery, also in Baton Rouge.

What led Collar to visit someone in Covington is not clear, according to Lentz, though he said Collar and a woman in the building may have been friends.

This is the first homicide in Covington this year, and only the fourth since 2005.

The most recent was in March 2016, when a Bogalusa man was charged with second-degree murder after providing synthetic marijuana to a 17-year-old who overdosed.

Covington police asked anyone with information on the latest death to call (985) 892-8500.โ€‹
