The Walls Project, founded in 2012, is dedicated to dismantling societal barriers that inhibit safe, healthy, and prosperous living, particularly for those affected by poverty. Over the past decade, Walls has spearheaded a range of integrated programs and events, contributing over $5 million in economic growth to the Baton Rouge area. The organizationโ€™s efforts are driven by a small, dedicated team of 14 employees and supported by a diverse board of 10 members. Wallsโ€™ initiatives, such as the MLK Festival of Service, the Futures Fund, Baton Roots Community Farm, and the OneRouge Coalitions, have engaged over 15,000 community members annually. These programs focus on economic empowerment, education, creative expression, and healthy living, fostering a sense of place and community investment across the region.

Public Art and Murals

A cornerstone of the Walls Projectโ€™s mission is the creation of stunning murals that celebrate Baton Rougeโ€™s rich diversity and history. With over 160 murals painted throughout the city, particularly in under-resourced areas, once-ignored walls are transformed into vibrant works of art that inspire and uplift entire neighborhoods. What truly sets their work apart is the deep community involvement. Local artists collaborate closely with residents to ensure the artwork reflects their unique stories and experiences, fostering a strong sense of pride and ownership while enhancing the cultural fabric of the city.

ReActivate BR

Since 2014, The Walls Project's ReActivate BR events, including the notable MLK Festival of Service, have mobilized over 6,000 volunteers across the Baton Rouge Capital Region, generating more than $8 million in economic activity through blight remediation and creative placemaking, with $4 million directly benefiting local artists and creatives. ReActivate has revitalized 85 sites with projects that focus on art installations, garden restoration, and blight removal. By concentrating on historically underserved neighborhoods, The Walls Project has built a dedicated network of volunteers, partners, and residents who transform neglected spaces through public art, community events, and revitalization initiatives, strengthening both economic and social bonds.

The Futures Fund Workforce and Afterschool Program

The Futures Fund, introduced by the Walls Project in 2016, is dedicated to empowering individuals with vital digital skills and advancing workforce development. This inspiring initiative offers a wide range of tech training through engaging workshops and courses, tailored for both youth and adults. Participants can explore dynamic topics such as Web Coding, AI Fundamentals, and Digital Literacy, as well as creative fields like Digital Photography and Graphic Design. By equipping attendees with these in-demand skills, the program unlocks exciting career opportunities in technology and the creative industries, playing a key role in closing the digital divide.

OneRouge and Civic Engagement

OneRouge, an initiative by the Walls Project, goes beyond art to champion broader community issues such as blight, environmental justice, and social inequality. By collaborating with local leaders, OneRouge seeks to address the systemic causes of these challenges and drive meaningful change. The initiative empowers residents to take an active role in shaping solutions, fostering a more just and vibrant community. Through education, collective impact, and advocacy, OneRouge is helping to create a stronger, more equitable future for Baton Rouge.

Impact

In just over a decade, the Walls Project has become a key player in Baton Rougeโ€™s revitalization efforts. By blending public art, economic development, and civic engagement, they are transforming both the physical landscape and the lives of the people who live there. Their work proves that art is more than decorationโ€”itโ€™s a catalyst for community empowerment and social change.
