The club used its grounds to harvest pecans from its trees and raise cattle and turkeys, though some cows started eating the course’s famous azaleas. By the fall of 1944, the cows and turkeys lost their club membership and Augusta National began making plans to reopen. Much of the restoration work was done by 42 German prisoners of war from nearby Camp Gordon, many of them part of an engineering crew from Gen. Erwin Rommel’s dreaded Afrika Korps. The course reopened in the spring of 1945 and in April 1946 the Masters tournament resumed with just 51 players. Herman Keiser, whose serious demeanor earned him the nickname “The Missouri Mortician” from his fellow pros, beat Ben Hogan by one stroke.
