Lutcher used a multifaceted offensive performance from multiple players to roll to a 57-20 victory against Donaldsonville at Floyd Boutte Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
Using two quarterbacks, and skill players who were threats running and receiving the football, the Bulldogs (1-1) broke out to a 35-13 halftime lead and never looked back.
“It’s out of necessity right now,” Lutcher coach Dwain Jenkins said of the versatility his team showed. “We’re trying to maximize the guys we have and get the most out of them.”
Lutcher’s running game rolled up 425 yards with two 100-yard rushers. Terron Charles ran for 156 yards and also threw for 153 yards while playing quarterback. Jaimylon Joseph added 100 yards on just nine carries and scored three touchdowns.
Charles completed 10 of 13 passes, and Dylan Delaneuville ran for two touchdowns on keepers from the quarterback position.
Johnny Jones had 126 yards on six catches for Lutcher, and Ashton Stark accounted for two touchdowns.
Skyler Garrison threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns, and Khy Jones had 132 yards receiving and a score for Donaldsonville (0-2).
The Tigers were feisty for 2½ quarters, taking the opening kickoff of the second half and marching down for a touchdown on a drive that ate up 5:03 on Garrison’s 8-yard pass to Gilbert Jones, and Ivis Sanchez’s point-after kick cut Lutcher’s lead to 35-20 with 6:57 to go in the third quarter.
But the Tigers couldn’t stop the Lutcher offense, and Joseph’s 10-yard run on the ensuing series gave his team a 43-20 edge with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter.
“I’m proud of our kids. They didn’t quit,” Donaldsonville coach Darnell Lee said. “They’re a lot farther along than we are right now. We’ve got freshmen on the field. Regardless of who’s on the field, there are expectations, and we’ve got to play tougher.”
Lutcher showed its own toughness early, shaking off a fumble on the opening kickoff that gave Donaldsonville the ball at the Bulldogs' 31. But the Bulldogs defense stiffened inside the 10 and forced a turnover on downs to end the early threat.
From there, Lutcher went to work with Johnny Jones an important cog in the first two scoring series. His 45-yard reception set up Delauneville’s 4-yard quarterback keeper and point-after kick for a 7-0 Lutcher edge with 6:56 remaining in the first quarter.
An interception on the next series gave the ball back to Lutcher. Jones’ 34-yard catch paved the way for Stark’s 10-yard TD run and a 14-0 Lutcher advantage with 4:04 to go in the first quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Stark showed his versatility with a 35-yard TD reception from Charles to put the Bulldogs up 21-0 just six seconds into the second quarter.
Donaldsonville showed occasional flashes of offensive explosiveness in the first half. From the its 27 on the ensuing series, Garrison threw a short pass to Khy Jones, who raced the length of the field for a 73-yard touchdown that cut Lutcher’s lead to 21-6 with 11:33 remaining in the first half.
