Woodlawn won a high-scoring shootout against visiting Brusly by putting together a drive that lasted the final 8:15 of the game.
Woodlawn picked up five first downs during the drive. Woodlawn, which trailed 32-19 in the second quarter, rallied for a 43-40 victory over Brusly on Friday night.
Woodlawn (1-1) got three touchdown passes from Ricky Mitchell, who completed 18 of 31 passes for 363 yards with one interception. Mitchell tossed two TD passes to Austin Primus in the third quarter. Primus caught an 18-yard pass with 6:55 left to put Woodlawn up 35-32.
Brusly (1-1) then drove 44 yards in five plays with quarterback Reggie Riley scoring on a bootleg keeper. Riley then added a two-point conversion to retake the lead at 40-35 with 1:21 left in the third quarter.
Woodlawn's Jaylen Knox had a 50-yard kickoff return to set up a one-play drive. Primus caught a 25-yard pass from Mitchell, and Omar Morehouse caught the two-point pass from Mitchell for a 43-40 lead with 1:02 left in the third quarter.
The teams combined for 33 points in the first quarter, 26 in the second and 24 in the third. But that's when everything slowed down.
Brusly's first possession of the fourth quarter ended when Riley's pass was tipped and intercepted by Woodlawn's Jordan Knox. Woodlawn fumbled on the next play, and Brusly took over at the Woodlawn 25-yard line. Brusly had four penalties in that drive and was forced to punt.
"We had some possessions where we didn't come away with points," Brusly coach Hoff Schooler said. "Hats off to Woodlawn with that ... drill at the end. That was a really good job with their personnel. We thought we had them stopped a couple of times, but they made the plays. We showed what we're capable of offensively in the first half."
Woodlawn coach Tramon Douglas was relieved to pull off the victory.
"Offensively, we played real well tonight, but defensively we played terrible in the first half," Douglas said. "We made some adjustments, and our defense was better in the second half. I'm proud of the guys for fighting back. We're happy for the win, and we have to get back to work."
Brusly junior Cam Carter had a monster first half with 226 yards of total offense. Carter had four catches for 139 yard and two scores, one run for 6 yards and was 1-of-1 passing for 81 yards and a score.
Brusly had three one-play TD drives in the first half and a defensive strip and score by Trey Arvie. Carter caught a 30-yard pass from Riley to give Brusly its first lead at 14-7 with 1:03 left in the first quarter. Carter added an 80-yard TD catch with 34 seconds left in the first quarter.
Woodlawn's Jaylen Knox had a 70-yard kickoff return score with 53 seconds left in the first quarter.
Morehouse had seven catches for 134 yards, and Jordan Knox six catches for 132 yards to pace Woodlawn. Brian Carter led Woodlawn in rushing with 95 yards on 20 carries. Jaylen Knox had three kickoff returns for 133 yards.
Riley completed 11 of 27 passes for 272 yards with one interception for Brusly. Dervin Ricard had an interception. Jamar McDowell had four catches for 96 yards, and Cam Carter finished with six catches for 148 yards for Brusly.
