Walt Handelsman: Sinking ships

"Trump does not like satire, obviously."

This off-the-cuff remark by great cartoonist Walt Handelsman (see Commentary page, "People in Louisian have a great sense of humor," published Dec. 19) tells us all we need to know about President Donald Trump. But do his die-hard supporters get it? Probably not. So let me explain. Every great leader this country ever had could take a joke. And cartoons making fun of our leaders are as old as the republic. Trump stands alone in being unable to tolerate criticism, much less laugh when the joke is on him. He can dish it out, but he can't take it.

At some point, even the dullest people will get bored with Trump's self-centered blather and constant flow of lies. Reality will sink in when a six-pack of beer costs $15 and a pound of chopped meat is $12. Folks will switch the channel and flip the page when it's about him. Theyโ€™ll throw away their red MAGA hats and over-priced Trump novelty items. Our wonderful cartoonists, like Walt Handelsman, will be able to make fun of POTUS in the finest tradition of our country. We can all just relax and have fun.
