A disturbance that forecasters of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season could develop subtropical or tropical characteristics off the southeast coast of the U.S. later this week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A non-tropical area of low pressure near the southeast coast during the next couple of days, forecasters said at 7 a.m. Tuesday. If the low remains offshore, there's a chance it could gradually develop as it moves northeast at 10 to 15 mph.

Weather systems generally lie somewhere on a spectrum between fully tropical, like a hurricane, and non-tropical, like a winter storm. The differences between the two , according to the Weather Channel.

Tropical disturbances form over warm ocean waters and are fueled by the release of latent heat from condensation, while non-tropical disturbances are driven by temperature differences between air masses. While tropical systems are nearly symmetrical and produce winds that are concentrated close to the warm core, non-tropical storms contain an cold core and produce scattered, disorganized winds.

It's not unusual for non-tropical weather systems to form over the Atlantic. Sometimes, those non-tropical systems have some chance of taking on tropical characteristics.

As of Tuesday morning, the disturbance had a low 10% chance of forming into a tropical depression or storm in the next week.

State Climatologist Jay Grymes said the disturbance is not likely to be an issue for ¶¶Òõh or the East Coast.

"Certainly nothing to worry about in the Gulf region," Grymes said.
