A man was arrested on a count of murder after a five-year-old boy died this month from injuries he received four years ago, Baton Rouge Police say.

Howard Youngblood, 40, was booked into East Baton Rouge Prison on a count of first-degree murder, police said in a news release.

On Dec. 15, 2022, police officers responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive juvenile, believed to be suffering from abuse and neglect, at a home in the 4000 block of Elm Drive.

The child, Tyshawn Brumfield, was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Brumfield died this month on June 8, police said.

Youngblood was arrested in December 2022 on a count of second-degree cruelty to juveniles, after the child he had been babysitting, Tyshawn, was brought by emergency responders to the hospital, with what a doctor called life-threatening injuries, including bleeding in his brain and brain swelling, according to arrest records, the Advocate reported at the time.

Youngblood, who the affidavit said was babysitting at the time, told detectives that the child fell on a set of steps.

Detectives arrested Youngblood after the childโ€™s doctor said the injuries were in no way consistent with a fall.
