While the lights are back on at Southern University after a power outage earlier this week, classes will continue online through Friday, while crews continue to test the repaired system, the university said in an online statement.
Normal campus operations are expected to resume on Monday, Sept. 14.
Power has been restored to academic buildings and residence halls, but the university said it still needs time to test the electrical system and complete maintenance in buildings that have been closed since the start of the week.
The Southern University Lab School resumed in-person classes Thursday.
The university’s Mayberry and Dunn dining halls are operational; the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union also has power, with generator support continuing for the food court.
In the announcement about classes resuming, Southern said its administrators met with state, local and federal officials, including the state and local Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, to coordinate resources, including generators, during the power outage. The college has had multiple power outages over the past year, interrupting classes and campus operations.
“As we prepare to return to full operations, our work will not end with restoring power,” Southern’s statement said. “The university will conduct a holistic assessment of the campus electrical system to identify long-term, sustainable solutions that strengthen the reliability and resilience of our infrastructure and help prevent disruptions in the future.”
