While Lafayette was either unlucky or lucky enough not to have a Shia LaBeouf spotting, the city’s Mardi Gras celebration still attracted droves of people.
Around 50,000 attended parades in Lafayette over Mardi Gras weekend up until Fat Tuesday, according to Downtown Lafayette Unlimited’s 2026 Mardi Gras report.
Unsurprisingly, people’s favorite day to celebrate Mardi Gras on Mardi Gras day, with 19,000 having attended a parade in Lafayette. Lundi Gras’ Queen’s Parade brought 10,600 visitors, while Saturday’s Bonaparte and Friday’s Allons Parades brought a combined 17,000 people to the city.
But who are the people who make up parade attendance?
Mostly families, according to DLU reports, with up to 63% of attendees from family households. The majority of those come from households with more than two people.
What that signals to DLU is that Lafayette Mardi Gras is a multi-generational, family-centered tradition, they wrote, which benefits from the ability to bring strollers, wagons, chairs, and ice chests.
The report says future decisions about Lafayette Mardi Gras, including route changes, should consider accessibility for children and older adults, comfort for multi-hour attendance, safe and clearly defined viewing spaces, and capacity that matches real attendance patterns.
