A flood watch has been issued by National Weather Service forecasters due to excessive rainfall expected to continue throughout the week in Acadiana.

The flood watch remains in effect through Wednesday at 7 a.m. Monday brought a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 88. Heat index values were expected to climb as high as 98.

“You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings,” forecasters noted in the alert. “Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.”

Local officials are urging residents to prepare ahead of the expected rainfall.

Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz said current forecasts indicate rainfall totals over the next three days could range from 7 to 15 inches in some locations, while other areas may receive lower amounts.

“We are asking our citizens to prepare for this weather event; secure property that may float or drift away, this will prevent drainage systems from clogging,” Guidroz said. “Be aware that some roads may flood; never attempt to drive through flooded streets. You could send water into homes or worse, become stranded in a vehicle taking on water.”

Guidroz added that parish government is providing sandbags and conducting flood mitigation efforts, while the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office is preparing rescue vehicles and personnel.

“Do your due diligence and prepare yourselves,” Guidroz said.
