With heat indices expected to surpass 100 degrees this week, the Lafayette Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has activated a network of cooling stations for residents to stay safe.
The heating stations will be operating from Monday through Friday to help mitigate heat-related illnesses.
The National Weather Service in Lake Charles estimates it will feel like temperatures in the 100s, as high as 113 in Lafayette, this week.
The cooling center locations in Lafayette include:
Girard Park pavilion, 500 Girard Park Drive. Fans and water available 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Dupuis Recreation Center, 1212 E. Pont Des Mouton Rd. Fans and water available 2-5 p.m. at the covered entryway.
Heymann Recreation Center pavilion, 1500 S. Orange St. Fans and water available under the pavilion 2-5 p.m.
Other places where residents can seek relief from the heat include:
Lafayette Parish public libraries during normal business hours.
Oak Street Health Primary Care, 2001 Moss St., Suite 1200, Lafayette, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Indoor cooling for adults 55 and up. Water available.
St. Joseph Diner, 613 Simcoe St., Lafayette, interior open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Water available.
Lafayette Transit System bus fares are suspended through Friday for anyone traveling to a designated cooling center.
OHSEP will continue to monitor weather conditions in coordination with the National Weather Service and will adjust cooling center hours or locations as conditions warrant.
